Our informal group of Native and Non-Native locals are united in a vision of a Sitka that is filled with enriching relationships and free from the harmful effects of racism, division, and exploitive colonization. The group is committed to learning, building transformational relationships across cultures, and making Sitka a better place for everyone; Native, American Indian, Filipino, White, Black, Hispanic, and all the cultures that are represented in our diverse community.
In recent years hundreds of Sitkans have celebrated Indigenous People’s Day, instead of Columbus Day, and Reconciliation Day, instead of Alaska Day. These October events were followed by a variety of activities for November's National Native American Heritage month. Sitka’s decolonization discussion group started in December of 2019 with the goal of providing a safe venue for regular public gatherings to continue this type of work throughout the year. To that end the group is hosting a potluck and discussion at 6pm at St. Peter’s on the first Monday of the month.
